Creating and Trading Virtual Hedge Funds
There are two ways to create a Virtual Hedge Fund (VHF). You can convert an existing portoflio to a VHF,
or you can create a new portfolio and make it a VHF.
Convert an existing portfolio to a VHF
- In the portfolio list, expand the portfolio that you wish to convert
- At the left action pane, click the "convert to hedge fund" link
- You will be shown the "Create Virtual Hedge Fund" page
- Fill in the "Basic Information" section. You may change the other values if you wish.
- Click "Save" to continue.
- Review the VHF information, click "Confirm" to create the VHF
- That's it!
Create a new VHF portfolio
- Click "new hedge fund" link in the Portfolio Summary sub-menu from your Home Page
- You will be prompted to create a new portfolio, do it
- Make sure the "Make this a Virtual Hedge Fund" button is checked
- Click "Create Portfolio" to continue
- You will be shown the "Create Virtual Hedge Fund" page
- Fill in the "Basic Information" section. You may change the other values if you wish.
- Click "Save" to continue.
- Review the VHF information, click "Confirm" to create the VHF
- That's it!
It's really that easy! Now you've created your own VHF, you can view your hedge funds and
portoflios from your home page. You may realize that one of the portfolio bars have turned red. A red bar indicates that the
portfolio is a VHF. Click the little arrow to expand the VHF info, and you will notice some extra information related to your
VHF.
The really cool thing about VHFs is that you can now treat it like a sotck and get quotes on it. In the
expanded portfolio view of your VHF, you will see a "Ticker Symbol" with a link. Click on the link to
instantly get a quote for your VHF. Cool, huh?
Alternatively, you can test it by going to the "Get Quotes" box on the menu bar, and type in the Ticker
Symbol and click "go". Just don't forget to include :MONX at the end of the symbol.
You can change the settings of your VHF by clicking on the "hedge fund settings" button in the expanded portfolio
view. This will take you to the page where you can change the settings of your VHF. Mind you, that some
of the settings cannot be changed once the VHF is created.
Tip: Make sure you write an attractive pitch for you fund so other will hand
you their money!
So now you want to find other members' VHF to invest in. How do you find them? There are a couple ways
to do this:
Check out the Top Virtual Hedge Funds
- Go to the "Top Virtual Hedge Funds" ranking page
- If you see any interesting funds, just click on the Ticker Symbol link to see more details
- If you like the VHF, you can click the "trade this symbol" link to create a Play and trade
Browse through the Recently Active Member List
- Go to the "Community" page
- Select "Recently Active Members" from the sub-menu
- If you see any interesting members, click on the username to view profile
- Under "Portfolio Summary", click "view all" to list their portfolios
- If you see a red portfolio bar, that means a VHF. Expand to view details
- Click on the Ticker Symbol to view a quote
- If you like the VHF, you can click the "trade" button to trade
Tipping Monkey tracks the Career Earnings for each VHF manager, which is the sum of all the management
and incentive fees collected from all VHFs that this member manages. While this is not necessarily an
indication of manager performance, it sure makes interesting conversation as to who go the fattest Virtual
Paycheck of all.
Obviously, the more people invest in your VHF, the more porpular it becomes and also the more capital
you have to manage. This also translates to more fees you can collect, and higher Career Earnings. There
are a few ways to market you VHF to other members that we can think of, and we're sure there are other more
creative ways that we have not thought of. Here are a couple of ideas:
Targeted Private Messages
- Go to the user profile of the target member
- Under "Member Profile", click "send private message"
- Compose and send a message to tell the member about your VHF and why they should invest
Get your friends involved
- Use the "Invite your friends" link to invite your friends to join
- Ask your friends to buy shares of your VHF
- Ask your friends to invite their friends and do the same
In either of these cases, we just ask you to exercise good judgement. If you don't hear back from a member
or friend after one or two requests, it would be safe to assume that hr/she is not interested. Please
refrain from bombarding other members with private messages or emails. We'd like to keep the environment
here pleasant and cordial!
That's it for the basics for now. If you any additional questions, please feel free to
send us a question / suggestion.
